City leaders understand that high quality education and job training programs strengthen our communities by developing a highly skilled workforce prepared to meet the demands of the new economy. Federal education and job training programs can be an important resource by contributing to our residents' efforts to obtain a quality education and helping them remain competitive and productive employees whose skills match those needed by employers.
As local governments continue to partner with their local businesses and industries to put people back to work, federal support for high quality education and job training programs that address these important needs is critical.
The Elementary and Secondary Education Act and the Workforce Investment Act are outdated. Last adopted in 2001 and 1998, respectively, these laws no longer provide education and job training systems in our communities with the tools they need to respond to recent and dramatic changes in the workplace.
