U.S. Under Secretary of Education Martha Kanter was the keynote speaker at the final event for the Communities Learning in Partnership (CLIP) initiative, a three-year project to increase the number of low-income young adults who obtain postsecondary credentials and degrees.
NLC has launched an innovative, two-year pilot program called Local Interventions for Financial Empowerment through Utility Payments (LIFT-UP) that seeks to help low-income families pay their utility bills and achieve financial stability.

NLC has selected 21 cities to participate in two upcoming regional leadership academies that will help them leverage federal funding to reduce childhood hunger.
Cities are invited to apply for participation in one of two leadership academies focused on expanding access to health insurance coverage for children and families. Selected cities will be eligible to receive additional planning grants of up to $30,000 and implementation grants of up to $260,000.
The new report, "Bright Spots in Community Engagement: Case Studies of U.S. Communities Creating Greater Civic Participation from the Bottom Up" explores community engagement efforts in 14 cities across the country.
In the past year, 4,885 additional children in 11 cities have received healthy meals at local afterschool programs as a result of city efforts to leverage federal Afterschool Meal Program funding.
