There are a number of diverse and informative mobile workshops being planned for delegates this year. New Orleans has learned a great deal about how to prepare for and prevent future disasters. This years mobile workshops will be a unique learning laboratory on the lessons learned from the Katrina disaster.

 

Space is limited so sign up early for the workshops that interest you most. Mobile Workshops are for paid conference delegates.  Spouses and guests are not eligible to attend mobile workshops but are encouraged to register and participate in the planned spouse/guest tours being coordinated.

A City Being Reborn: 17 Targeted Recovery Zones in Progress: Visit one of 17 Targeted Recovery Zones and see first hand the various stages of the process of reclaiming the land for building. See areas still devastated, some that have been cleared off and some rebuilt on this fascinating tour. (also offered Friday 2:00 – 4:30 

Heal on Wheels: Health Dept. Mobile Clinics

Tour a mobile health clinic and learn how, in the wake of Katrina, medical supplies and care are being given to the citizens of New Orleans. 

 

Keeping the Walls from Tumbling Down: Levee Protection Projects

We all watched on TV and saw the images of the levee failures during Katrina. See how the Army Corps of Engineers has repaired and is developing ways to ensure the levees hold in the future. Also learn about the Louisiana Coastal Restoration program is doing to combat the coast line erosion from Katrina and what they are doing to restore the delicate ecosystem damaged by the storm. (also being offered Friday 2:00 – 4:30
 

 

Rebuilding New Orleans:

Visits the Central City and Holy Cross neighborhoods of New Orleans, two of the 17 areas of the City designated for significant reinvestment strategies and see first hand,  rebuilding efforts of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) along with non-profit and for-profit developers who are making major private sector investments in these neighborhoods. Participants will hear the “insiders” view from representatives from the development community, financial sector, and city community development officials and will also visit the redevelopment site of a 450 unit public housing development.

Getting Out: Office of Emergency Planning - Disaster Evacuation Plan

Learn how the city of New Orleans is developing a plan to ensure the safe evacuation of its citizens in the event of another Katrina.   

 

Housing the Homeless: Public-Private Partnerships for Affordable Housing

Learn how working together public and private partnerships came together to create affordable housing for low income individuals and families. (also being offered Friday 2:00 – 4:30)

 

  Mobilizing Volunteers To Create Community – A Trip to the City of Gretna

Venture across the Mississippi River to historic Gretna where delegates will learn about three city events that have been created and run by an all volunteer corps.  In an effort to rebuild and revitalized their community after Hurricane Katrina, city resident volunteers established a weekly Farmer’s Market, a monthly Art Walk and expanded Gretna’s annual Heritage Festival.  Participants will learn what it takes to build a volunteer corps and reestablish a sense of community after a crisis.

Back to School: Building Partnerships in Education

Learn how the University of New Orleans and Tulane University are working together to bring students back to the area and increase attendance since the storm. 

 

Taking a Bite out of Crime: New Orleans Police Department

See how the city is ensuring the safety of its citizens by using new techniques such as Crime Cameras, Community Policing, Fast Track Processing of Offenders, Multi Parish/Multi Agency Cooperation and much more.

 Keeping it High and Dry: Sewerage & Water Board - Pumping Station Operations

During Katrina, water pumping stations were overwhelmed trying to keep up with the rain, storm serge, and the levee breaks. See how the city is increasing its pumping station capacity to keep the city dry in future water events.  

 

New Orleans Historic Preservation: Preserving the Past – Reclaiming for the Future

This mobile workshop focuses on revitalizing the inner city by converting historic buildings into apartments and hotels. Visit a historic cotton mill converted to apartments and now repositioned as condos; a historic can factory converted to apartments with some affordable units; and an office building changed into a hotel. (also being offered Friday 2:00 – 4:30) 

 

2:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

 

Rebuilding the Mississippi Gulf Coast:

This tour of the Mississippi Gulf Coast will illustrate for participants how local coastal communities have begun to rebuild.  Participants will visit the towns of Waveland and Bay St. Louis, Ground Zero for Hurricane Katrina, and travel onto Biloxi to learn firsthand how this historic city is partnering with the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and other national and regional partners.  This tour will clarify why long-term strategies and commitments and multi-sectored partners are essential to re-establishing a base for commercial and residential building.  Participants will meet and hear how local officials and community-based leaders see their challenges and goals to
bring back their communities

Learn how the New Orleans Conventions and Visitors Bureau are luring tourists back the city. See how they are restoring the tourism economy through special programs like "volunteerism" back to a thriving status. Learn how Louis Armstrong Airport is offering business incentives for airlines and how the airport authorities are getting airline carriers back through incentives to get flight schedules back to their pre-Katrina levels.
