Women in Municipal Government

Women in Municipal Government (WIMG) constituency group was formed in 1974 to serve as a forum for communication and networking among women local elected officials and their colleagues within the National League of Cities (NLC).  It strives to raise awareness about issues of concern to women, and it encourages women to seek public office in their communities.

Over the years, WIMG has worked to ensure that women hold leadership positions within NLC and serve on its Board of Directors and other special leadership groups.  It has successfully forged a prominent role for women in the development of NLC's National Municipal Policy and its agenda for the nation's cities and towns.  WIMG has a Board of Directors, as well as an Advisory Council which consists of its past presidents who remain in elected or appointed municipal office.

WIMG welcomes new and returning members each year.  The easiest way to join WIMG is by paying annual dues and fees via the November Congress of Cities registration process.  Information about joining and dues and fees is available on the NLC Congress of Cities registration form.  Dues and fees can be paid online in conjunction with the NLC conference registration fee.  Prospective new members may also join throughout the year by filling out the membership application located in the membership brochure and submitting it to NLC via its instructions.

WIMG Leadership Award
This award recognizes female municipal officials for their unique and outstanding leadership in local government. Each year, a winner is recognized for individual achievement in initiating a creative and successful program in local government that helps to improve a city or town's quality of life for its citizens, particularly if the leadership serves as a specific mentoring model for future female leaders.  The 2011 WIMG Leadership Award Luncheon took place on Friday, November 11, at the NLC Phoenix Congress of Cities.
