Education and Training for Local Municipal Officials
The National League of Cities is committed to strengthening and promoting the leadership capacity of our nations' local elected officials. As part of the NLC mission to create stronger communities, the Leadership Training Institute was established to provide local officials with professional development opportunities that accentuate the vital personal skills and abilities needed to facilitate positive change and innovation within their communities. Promoting excellence and innovation in leadership of local elected officials is the foundation of the National League of Cities Leadership Training Institute.
More than 3,000 mayors, council members, and local leaders participate in leadership seminars and programs designed to explore the nature and practice of local government leadership. All of the Institute's programs focus on building leadership skills and developing strategies for implementation in the participant's home community.

Leadership Training Institute Seminars
Each year the Leadership Training Institute offers a wide variety of National and Regional Seminars across the United States to help local officials examine emerging issues, develop new skills, and connect with other local officials from across the country.
Certificate of Achievement in Leadership Program
The Leadership Training Institute has developed the Certificate of Achievement in Leadership Program in an effort to recognize and acknowledge excellence in local government leadership. Participation in this program will allow you to organize your professional development around the critical skills necessary for excellence in leadership. By attending LTI seminars at NLC annual conferences, Regional Programs and the Leadership Summit members attain credits toward the Certificate of Achievement in Leadership Program.
Annual Leadership Summit
The Annual Leadership Summit is an enlightening and exciting leadership retreat designed specifically for local officials.The Summit features presentations by leadership scholars and includes opportunities for personal reflection and interaction with respected local leaders from across the United States. The limited group size provides insightful learning experiences because the trainers can engage and focus on you. In every city that serves as a host of the Annual Leadership Summit, you will explore motivating ideas to weave into your role as a leader. Profound presentations will guide you to identify the leadership skills and abilities to lead in today challenging world. Leadership Training Council
The work of the Leadership Training Institute is guided by the Leadership Training Council, which is made up of local elected officials appointed annually by the NLC President. The principal mission of the Leadership Training Council (LTC) is to provide guidance and direction to National League of Cities’ Leadership Training Institute in its efforts to promote excellence and innovation in the arena of local government leadership development and local government leadership education.
