The single uniqueness of the greatest leaders of all time is Trust. In the twenty-first century, trust has become the world’s most precious resource. Trust has the ability to accelerate or destroy a relationship, a business, an organization, or a community.

Creating a Culture of Trust
The trusted leader is followed. Local government officials must do their part to build trust and reinvent our institutions to help communities and residents.  This is a crucial time for government leaders and citizens to rethink how we meet our needs today so that we ensure a desirable future for generations to come.  A time of great challenge is also a time of great opportunity to build the trust edge and ascribe to leadership that leaves a positive legacy.

Leadership That Leaves a Legacy
The trusted leader creates a positive legacy.  Often we think of legacy as something to worry about later in life, if at all. Even the idea of legacy can be daunting. The earlier that a leader begins to consider their legacy, the more effective leader you will be today as well as over the course of your career. Which personal characteristics (or skills, behaviors, or values) will you most like to be remembered?

Develop Leadership Skills
Join renowned leaders, authors and scholars as you engage in a unique, reflective program that will help guide your work and leadership in local government.  Insightful learning experiences will provide you the opportunity to reflect, recognize and appreciate what you can do to enhance your success as a municipal leader.

Passing the Baton: Building a Legacy of Leadership in Your Community

Dr. Deborah (Reno) Acker is the coordinator for Educational Programs and Training, Shelton Leadership Center at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C.  The Gen. Hugh Shelton Leadership Center was founded in 2002 following the retirement of Gen. Shelton as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff by Gen. Shelton as a means of “giving back” to his alma mater and to assist in the development of the next generation of values-based leaders.   Center outreach programs focus on leadership development within corporate, governmental, educational, non-profit and youth development organizations.  Gen. Shelton was greatly influenced by his childhood experiences within an “Extension family” and surrounded by citizen leaders who were committed to the ideals of positive youth development. The mission of the Center is: To inspire, educate, and develop values-based leaders committed to personal integrity, professional ethics, and selfless service.
