As the National League of Cities pointed out in a recent Municipal Action Guide prepared with support from the Lumina Foundation for Education, mayors and other municipal leaders – elected and appointed – can play many key roles in a local postsecondary success initiative. These roles include convening partners, setting public accountability goals, commissioning research, and aligning postsecondary success goals with citywide economic development priorities. Representatives of sites participating in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's Communities Learning in Partnership - including Mesa (Ariz.) Counts on College; Portland (Ore.) Cradle to Career; and the Philadelphia Council for College and Career Success - will explain the varied means they have used to engage municipal leaders, and catalog the benefits of and challenges to their efforts to date.
