The National League of Cities, National Association of Counties and National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors are hosting a webinar to provide members with an overview of State and Local Implementation Grant Program (SLIGP), details about the state application process and information about how local elected officials should be engaging with their state governments to plan and prepare for the development of a nationwide public safety broadband network.
The U.S. Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) recently announced the availability of $121.5 million in grants to help states plan and prepare for the establishment of a nationwide wireless broadband network for public safety. SLIGP is making funding available to all 56 states and territories to support planning, consultation, education and outreach activities. The grant program will also support efforts to collect information on infrastructure and equipment that could be used by the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) in building a wireless public safety broadband network.
FirstNet, an independent authority inside NTIA, was established by The Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012 to construct, operate and maintain a nationwide wireless broadband network that will enable first responders to better communicate with each other during emergencies and help save lives. The Act also directed NTIA to establish the State and Local Implementation Grant Program (SLIGP) to support related consultation activities, including state consultation with regional, local and tribal governments, which will play a critical role in ensuring the success of a nationwide, interoperable wireless network for public safety.
