2014 WIMG Annual Conference

  • Date: September 17, 2014 - September 20, 2014
  • Location: Newark, New Jersey
  • Category: Event

Overview

Established in 1974 and celebrating its fortieth anniversary with NLC this year, the Women in Municipal Government (WIMG) constituency group was formed to serve as a forum for communication and networking among women local elected officials and their colleagues within the National League of Cities (NLC). It strives to raise awareness about issues of concern to women, and it encourages women to seek public office in their communities.

Attend this year’s Annual Summer Conference to:

     - Enhance your network with female elected officials and statewide leaders
     - Learn more about issues in special seminars that help to expand your skill sets
     - Strengthen your governance skills
     - Adapt community arts programs as best practices for your community
     - Attend the WIMG Board of Directors Meeting
     - Find solutions to challenging problems in your hometown
     - Consider becoming a future leader in WIMG and NLC

Why you should attend
The meeting will include sessions that offer creative solutions for local leaders about financial literacy, women’s empowerment, the importance of the performing arts in communities, women’s health issues and a special presentation by the Center for American Women in Politics at Rutgers University.

Newark, close to East Orange and New York City, is the financial, commercial, and transportation nucleus of the Garden State. Newark also is a thriving cultural hub, filled with events and attractions for visitors from near and far. From festivals and parades to museums and musical venues, there something for everyone to explore and enjoy in Newark.

To say nothing of the diverse culinary adventures awaiting inquisitive palates. Portuguese, Spanish, Brazilian, Greek, and soul food are but a few of the many cuisines to be found in Newark's restaurants. Home to the Weequahic Golf Course, the Newark Bears baseball team, and numerous parks and recreation centers, Newark also is a destination for sports enthusiasts.

Complimentary NLC University Seminar
There will also be an NLC University skills training session for professional credits on the topic of  "Thinking, Planning and Acting Strategically: A Case for Local Government Leaders," which addresses significant challenges for communities trying to achieve their desired goals.  A benefit of membership in WIMG helps individuals receive training and networking opportunities.  All NLC members and colleagues with an interest in women and family issues in their communities are all welcome to attend.
