Overview

The National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO) was created in 1970 to represent the interests of African American elected officials. NBC-LEO's objectives include increasing African American participation on NLC's steering and policy committees to ensure that policy and program recommendations reflect African American concerns and benefit their communities.

The organization also works with its members to inform them on issues affecting the African American community and helps to devise ways to achieve their community objectives through legislation and direct action.

Why you should attend
The meeting will include sessions that offer creative solutions for local leaders about social media, communications, global investment strategies, black male achievement, and ethics for good government leadership. There will also be mobile workshops – on Wednesday, July 30, from 9:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and a full-day mobile workshop on Saturday, August 2 which showcases cities in the Rochester region and ends in Niagara Falls, Canada.

Rochester, New York is known as the "Flower City." Beautiful blooms and stunning gardens make the seasons a colorful array of experiences. Spring kicks off the festival season with more than 140 festivals and events (May through October) in the Rochester and Finger Lakes region.

Warmer weather means outdoor adventures at amusement parks, boating on lakes, rivers and the Erie Canal, hiking in more than 12,000 acres of parkland, agri-tourism, and much more. There are more than 100 family friendly attractions to explore in the Greater Rochester area. Families of all ages will discover imagination, history, science, art, and fun that will create memories for years to come. Golf is great in the Rochester and Finger Lakes region with more than 60 public and semipublic golf courses.

Complimentary NLC University Seminar
There will also be an NLC University skills training session for professional credits on the topic of Ethics which addresses the challenges and risks local officials face when implementing leadership. A benefit of membership in NBC-LEO helps individuals receive training and networking opportunities. All NLC members and colleagues with an interest in this issue are welcome to attend.  

NBC-LEO Board of Directors Meeting and Black Tie Evening Event
Board members should plan to attend the NBC-LEO Board of Directors meeting at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 31. There will also be a special NBC-LEO Black Tie Ball on Friday, August 1, at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center at 7:00 p.m.

 
Regional Approach for a Global Economy Full Day Mobile Workshop and Passport Requirement
On Saturday, August 2, participants can be a part of a full-day mobile workshop from Rochester to Niagara Falls, Canada with opportunities to hear about Rochester and nearby regional cities and their involvement with the global economy and trade with the country of Canada as a close neighbor. Hear from experts about successes in the region.

Those delegates planning to participate in this mobile workshop will need their up-to-date passports in order to enter and depart from Canada to return to Rochester. To obtain or renew a passport, go to the State Department’s web site, www.state.gov and search Travel for passport information and visa requirements.

Conference Registration Fees
The NBC-LEO Annual Summer Conference advance registration deadline is Monday, July 14, 2014. Registration is online only. Registration onsite fees apply after July 14. Registration fees are:

NBC-LEO First-Time Attendee Advance Registration $155.00 (After July 14 is $205.)

NBC-LEO Members and Non Members Advance Registration $205.00 (After July 14 is $255.)

Spouse/Guest Advance Registration $100 (After July 14 is $120.00)

Youth/Student Advance Registration $65.00 (After July 14 is $80.)

Spouse/Guest/Youth/Student Attendance and Registration
In order for individual spouses/guests/youth/students to attend any or all NBC-LEO Annual Summer Conference activities and meal functions, each individual must be officially registered for the conference and wear registration badges at all times for admittance to sessions/meals and the mobile tours.

Event Cancellation Policy
Any registration cancellations occurring after July 14, 2014 will be subject to a $50 cancellation fee. Refunds (minus the $50) will be mailed after October 1, 2014. Requests for cancellations must be in writing and sent via email to constituencygroups@nlc.org.
