Kearns Goodwin Reflects on Lincoln Presidency

 With civil war imminent, the nation was in peril, so newly inaugurated President Abraham Lincoln named his chief competitors for the 1860 Republican Party nomination to his Cabinet, historian Doris Kearns Goodwin told attendees at the Delegates Luncheon during the Congress of Cities in San Antonio.
Kearns Goodwin, author of "Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln," said during her address that the 16th chief executive felt he needed the best men around him.
The leadership qualities that enabled Lincoln to meld these disparate men into a winning team included his capacity to listen to differing points of view and ability to communicate by telling stories, she told the delegates.
