by Cyndy Liedtke Hogan

2010officersRonald O. Loveridge, mayor of Riverside, Calif., was elected NLC President during the Annual Business Meeting during the Congress of Cities in San Antonio.

James Mitchell Jr., council member, Charlotte, N.C., was elected First Vice President and Lester Heitke, mayor of  Willmar, Minn., was elected Second Vice President.

Delegates to the Annual Business Meeting also chose 19 elected officials and four state municipal league directors to serve on the NLC Board of Directors for the coming year, in addition to those serving out the remainder of their two-year term.

Loveridge said cities need to be a participant in national issues and he will facilitate that as NLC Presdient.

“The success of cities we represent requires that we go beyond City Hall, beyond our city limits,” he said. “We must look outside for opportunities and resources. As President, this will be a central message I will offer in 2010.”

Mitchell and Heitke echoed Loveridge’s sentiments, saying they will work hard to make sure NLC’s message is heard.

“I pledge to you to continue working with all of you and other levels of government to advance our agenda and move our nation forward,’ Mitchell said. “This is our opportunity as THE organization representing cities and towns.”

“Our cities face great challenges and we as city officials come to NLC for refreshment,” Heitke said. “I can’t wait to do my part to rise to the challenge.”
