Application Process Underway for NLC Officers and Board of Directors
by Martha Moss
The application process for the 2010 NLC Officers and Board of Directors got underway last month with the appointment of the 15-member Nominating Committee, headed by NLC Immediate Past President James C. Hunt, councilmember, Clarksburg, W.Va.
“It is exciting to see the enthusiasm among our members as they strive for leadership positions,” said Hunt. “I look forward to a spirited, inspired group of NLC members seeking positions on the 2010 NLC Board of Directors at the San Antonio Congress of Cities.”
The Candidate Data Form
All candidates for NLC Officer and Board of Director positions should indicate plans to run for office by completing a Candidate Data Form, which is used to ensure that the Nominating Committee has consistent background information on all candidates.
Submissions of the Candidate Data Form are highly encouraged on or before October 28, so that materials can be assembled for the Nominating Committee well before it holds its first meeting in San Antonio.
On or before October 28, Candidate Data Forms can be submitted to the Nominating Committee, c/o Donald J. Borut, NLC executive director, in Washington, D.C. Please refer to the Candidate Data Form for more information about submitting the form by e-mail, fax or mail.
After October 28, all candidates for NLC office must hand deliver a Candidate Data Form to the NLC Conference Headquarters in the San Antonio Convention Center, during the Congress of Cities, no later than 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 11.
Candidate Data Forms are available from Martha Moss (moss@nlc.org or (202) 626-3022) in the Executive Office at NLC. Candidate Data Forms are also available on the NLC website.
The Nominating Process
The Nominating Committee will convene for a public hearing on Thursday, November 12, at 4:00 p.m., during the Congress of Cities in San Antonio, to receive nominations for NLC Officers and Board of Directors. All candidates for office will address the Nominations Committee to present their credentials.
Candidates for Officer positions will have five minutes to address the Nominating Committee, and Board of Director candidates will have three minutes. There will be no additional nominating and seconding speeches.
The Nominating Committee will then meet in closed session on Friday, November 13, to develop its recommended slate. That slate will be presented to the voting delegates for action the following day at the Annual Business Meeting. The recommended slate will be distributed broadly during the conference shortly after the committee finishes its work that Friday afternoon.
All individuals interested in running for NLC office are urged to contact their state municipal league first for advice, guidance and support. The next step is to complete and submit a Candidate Data Form to NLC as soon as possible.
