NLC University Now Accepting Applications for Annual Michael Lynch Scholarship
With the 2016 Leadership Summit approaching, members of the National League of Cities interested in attending are eligible to apply for the Michael H. T. Lynch Memorial Scholarship Award. The National League of Cities honors the work and memory of Councilmember Michael Lynch of Kirkwood, Missouri. Councilmember Michael Lynch tragically lost his life in February of 2008, but continues to inspire city leaders and citizens alike through his legacy of service to his community.
Councilmember Lynch was an active proponent of education and training for his fellow elected officials, encouraging the development of leadership and advocacy skills for leaders to best serve their communities. In honor of this legacy, the Michael H. T. Lynch Memorial Scholarship provides one local elected or appointed official with the opportunity to attend the annual NLC University Leadership Summit.
The Leadership Summit is a retreat-style program designed to develop the personal leadership skill of local city officials, and this year, the focus will be on using a cross-sector approach to building community partnerships between the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. Participants will take part in a three-day program that brings together thought leaders and practitioners from the different sectors to explore multisector, collaborative leadership, preparing leaders to reflect on, recognize, and appreciate the multitude of factors affecting communities' complex challenges.
This year, the Leadership Summit will take place in Madison, Wisconsin, September 28 to October 1. The scholarship provides the recipient with $2,500 towards the program's registration expenses and travel costs with the hopes of making the Leadership Summit available to a local official with the same passion for community leadership as the late Councilmember Lynch.
