According to 1992 Census of Governments statistics (which was the last time the Census Bureau collected this information) the number of local elected officials in the United States was 493,830; this included:

  •   58,818 County officials -- 12%
  • 135,531 Municipal officials -- 27%
  • 126,958 Town or Township officials -- 26%
  •   88,434 School district officials -- 18%, and
  •   84,089 Special district officials -- 17%
