Strengthening & promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership, and governance

One of the most important benefits to members of the National League of Cities is the communication networks, enabling city officials to share vital information and engage in discussions on a variety of topics that are important to local government officials and their constituents.  This section of the new NLC website has been developed to broaden networking opportunities for city officials.

Institute for Youth, Education & Families Networks

Early Care and Education City Network
The YEF Institute offers monthly electronic early childhood updates with information about local government initiatives to support early childhood, strategies for municipal leaders, and summaries of current early childhood events and research.

Education Policy Advisors Network (EPAN)
EPAN is a national network of senior municipal officials who are working with their mayors and school districts on key issues and strategies related to education reform, student achievement, and school improvement. Through periodic emails, a bi-monthly newsletter, a monthly conference call, and an annual meeting, EPAN members have the opportunity to share information, insights, and lessons learned.

Afterschool Policy Advisors Network (APAN)
APAN helps municipal officials and their senior staff promote afterschool opportunities in their cities and nationally by sharing resources, research, tools and strategies, policies, and best practices.  Members receive regular communications through periodic conference calls, e-mail listservs, audioconferences, and mailings to facilitate the exchange of ideas and lessons learned.

Youth Participation Advisors Network (YPAN)
This network focuses on the role that local governments can play in promoting youth participation through youth councils, teen courts, youth service, youth mapping of community assets, appointments of youth to municipal boards and commissions, youth summits, and other methods of youth civic engagement.

Municipal Network for Disconnected Youth (MNDY)
This is a nationwide peer learning community that focuses on older teens and young adults (ages 16-24) who are out of work, out of school, and lacking strong connections to the community and caring adults.  MNDY is principally a resource that municipal officials, and those who work with such officials, may use to create and continuously improve partnerships, policies, and programs that re-engage older youth with school, work, and their fellow citizens.
