What better day than Labor Day to focus on the 3.5 million municipal workers who keep our cities and towns running?  Consider doing a feature on these hard-working but often-overlooked men and women.  The National League of Cities (NLC) is offering interviews with local elected officials and municipal employees from across the country who can discuss their role in maintaining livable and functioning communities and their reasons for choosing a career in public service.

Without this often under-recognized labor force, who would collect the garbage, replace bulbs in traffic lights or inspect new construction projects to make sure our homes and businesses are safe? What about the librarians and men and women who work at the community centers with our kids?

These dedicated people, along with our police, fire and emergency workers, often do the necessary but thankless jobs that make our communities livable, including street repair, organizing cultural events, building and maintaining city infrastructure, keeping city streets and sidewalks free of debris, and many other essential yet taken-for-granted jobs.

Local elected officials (often for minimal stipends) are on the job 24/7, with trips to the grocery store or a Little League game turning into impromptu hearings or constituent meetings.
