| Washington D.C. ----- On March 15, representatives from a coalition of local government and non-profit associations will be joined by US Senator Paul Sarbanes (D-Md) and other members of Congress at a news conference on Capitol Hill to protest the proposed cuts and changes to the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. The event is timed to coincide with votes expected this week on the budget in the House. The news conference will be held at 11:45 a.m. in Room 2247 Rayburn House Office Building and is part of the City Lobby Day activities of the National League of Cities (NLC) and National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO).
?During the past four days, more than 2,400 local elected officials from across the country have met to discuss the proposed cuts to the Community Development Block Grant program. Our message is clear: ?No cuts and no move,?? said NLC President Anthony A.Williams, mayor of Washington, DC. ?The CDBG program brings millions of dollars into our communities ? not just federal dollars, but leveraged private funding that supports our economic effort. We have a strong, united and non-partisan message to block this effort.?
Joining NLC and NAHRO are the US Conference of Mayors (USCM) and the National Association of Counties (NACo), part of a national coalition to stop the elimination of the CDBG program.
