| NLC To Be Lead Sponsor for Disaster Recovery Conference |
|
A disaster changes everything.
Tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, industrial accidents, terrorist incidents, wildfires, landslides ... disasters come in many forms and no community is invulnerable.
After the initial emergency ends, the process of rebuilding begins.
However, knowing how to proceed on the long road to recovery is difficult.
NLC is co-sponsoring Restoration 2006: Community and Economic Recovery After a Disaster in partnership with the International City/County Management Association and National Association of Counties. This new conference, to be held May 16-17 at the Sheraton New Orleans, is focused on post-disaster community and economic redevelopment.
?Every local elected leader needs to be prepared for a disaster ? be it a storm, flood, wildfire or terrorist attack ? and needs to be prepared for the difficult period of recovery and rebuilding that follows in the months and years afterwards,? said NLC Executive Director Donald J. Borut. ?Restoration 2006 is designed to empower local leaders and their partners in state, regional and federal government, nonprofits and the business community with insights, strategies and connections that will be vital in the recovery process when a catastrophe strikes.?
The two-day conference will feature lessons learned, case studies, innovative strategies for recovery within a robust educational program of general sessions, panel presentations and discussion-oriented roundtables as well as exceptional networking and peer exchange opportunities.
Educations tracks include: Community, Service and Infrastructure Recovery; Economic Development, Business and Job Restoration; Financing and Incentive Approaches; Environmental Concerns; and Collaboration for Restoration.
Additionally, a solutions exhibit hall will feature disaster recovery firms and organizations with products, services, and resources appropriate for community and economic redevelopment.
Ideas for presentations are being solicited and must be received by February 28. Details: Visit www.restoration2006.org for more information, to register for the conference, to submit ideas for presentations, or to sign up for the exhibit hall.
