Childhood Obesity Peer Networks

Municipal Network for Combating Obesity

Overview

Formed in 2007, the Municipal Network for Combating Obesity (MNCO) provides training, tools and resources that local officials need to combat childhood obesity in their communities. The network assists municipal leaders in adopting and implementing policies to promote active living, healthy eating and access to healthy, affordable foods. The network is made possible by the support of Leadership for Healthy Communities, a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Membership

More than 450 members participate in the network, including local elected officials, senior municipal staff, school superintendents, senior school district staff, and other policymakers, researchers, practitioners, and national partner organizations.  This network is open to all municipal officials who are interested in joining.  An MNCO steering committee guides the network’s activities and focus.

Benefits

  • Monthly e-newsletter: Members of the MNCO network receive monthly email newsletters sent jointly from NLC and the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) that highlight YEF Institute and AASA activities and resources, showcase promising city efforts, spotlight strategies for promoting active living and healthy eating, and include additional resources, research, and relevant news items.
  • Access to targeted information on resources and funding: In addition the monthly newsletter, MNCO members receive periodic updates about new resources and publications pertaining to health and wellness, upcoming events, and health and wellness-focused funding opportunities.
