About the National Summit on Your City's Families

The National Summit on Your City’s Families is the nation’s largest gathering of municipal leaders who are working to improve the lives of children, youth, and families in their communities.

Hundreds of mayors, city councilmembers, and senior municipal staff – along with their local school and community partners – from cities and towns across America gather every two years at this National Summit for two days of learning, networking, and team-building.

Summit participants learn about innovative strategies in a wide range of areas, such as improving public schools, expanding afterschool opportunities, keeping young people safe and out of trouble, promoting youth development, combating childhood obesity, improving school readiness, and promoting family economic success.

Stepping It Up: City Strategies for Combating Childhood Obesity

Six Reasons to Attend the Summit

1. LEARN new skills, ideas, and innovative strategies from national experts and from other communities that are taking action to improve public schools, expand afterschool opportunities, improve school readiness, keep young people safe and out of trouble, support youth development and leadership, combat childhood obesity, and promote family economic success.

2. NETWORK with peers and colleagues grappling with the same questions and problems facing your city or town, share your experience and knowledge, and build relationships that can strengthen and enhance your future work.

3. CONNECT with the National League of Cities and its Institute for Youth, Education, and Families - a vital resource for information, technical assistance, training, and cross-city exchange that has strengthened the capacity of hundreds of cities since 2000.

4. PARTNER with school and community leaders from your city to set priorities, sharpen your focus, and determine next steps for taking action on behalf of the children, youth, and families in your community.

5. ENGAGE with other participants in high-quality workshop sessions that offer tools and tips for involving key stakeholders, building community-wide collaborations, communicating effectively with local residents, and measuring your progress over time.

6. INSPIRE local action when you return home with a collection of great ideas, an enhanced plan of action, an energized group of partners, and a new network of peers in cities and towns throughout the country to whom you can turn for advice and support.

Opportunities for Teams

Local teams of municipal, school, and community leaders had the chance to participate in a special session at the 2007 Summit to help strengthen citywide collaboration and advance local efforts.  Bonnie Politz, vice president and co-director of the Academy for Educational Development's Center for Youth Development and Policy Research, joined the YEF Institute's Leon Andrews and senior consultant John Calhoun, former president and CEO of the National Crime Prevention Council, in leading the pre-conference session on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007.

This pre-conference session, which was open to Summit participants who were part of city teams with three or more attendees, highlighted effective strategies for developing local action plans.  Brief presentations described successful approaches utilized by a wide range of NLC member cities in a highly interactive format designed to encourage questions and discussion.

Participating teams also engaged in a series of exercises designed to sharpen their focus on key opportunities and challenges within their own communities and to ensure that they got the most out of their Summit experiences.
