About the Council

NLC's Council on Youth, Education, and Families (YEF Council) continues to guide the YEF Institute's work. The membership of this Council, unlike any other NLC committee or council, is composed of not only local elected officials (appointed because of their commitment to these issues), but also youth members and representatives from major national organizations and corporations concerned about children and families.

The YEF Institute's launch in January 2000 was the culmination of extensive planning and development efforts by the YEF Council. Under the leadership of Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, the founding YEF Council chair, the Council created and promoted the idea and mission of the YEF Institute and was instrumental in securing endorsement from NLC's Board of Directors.
