 Preventing Gang Violence and Building Communities Where Young People Thrive (2010)

This toolkit draws upon lessons learned over the past three years from the California Cities Gang Prevention Network, a 13-city network sponsored in collaboration with the National Council on Crime and Delinquency to identify strategies for reducing gang violence and victimization.  Each of the network cities has developed and is now implementing a comprehensive gang reduction plan that blends prevention, intervention and enforcement techniques.

The State of City Leadership for Children and Families


Implementing a Citywide Gang Violence Reduction Strategy (2008)

This strategy paper highlights comprehensive, citywide gang prevention initiatives in San Jose, San Bernardino, and Santa Rosa, Calif. These strategies are derived from lessons emerging from the California Cities Gang Prevention Network.

The strategy paper shows how these three cities have addressed the essential elements of a local gang violence prevention action plan, and blended prevention, intervention, and enforcement strategies.

Implementing a Citywide Gang Violence Reduction Strategy


Vital Partners: Mayors and Police Chiefs Working Together for America's Children and Youth (2006)

This report, developed through a project funded by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) and conducted in partnership with the International Association of Chiefs of Police, highlights mayor-law enforcement partnerships to keep young people safe in 17 cities and towns.

Partnerships featured include those from the cities of Boston, Burnsville, Minn., El Paso, New Brighton, Minn., New Haven, Sallisaw, Okla., and San Jose.

The YEF Institute's monthly audioconference series features talk-show style discussions between Institute staff, national experts, and city leaders to highlight best practices in a broad range of program areas. The Institute makes transcripts of these calls available for local officials who are unable to dial into the calls.


Comprehensive Gang Model Overview

The U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) and the Bureau of Justice Assistance have created an online tool to assist cities in implementing the OJJDP Comprehensive Gang Model.  It provides a 23-minute discussion of OJJDP's model for identifying target areas with high levels of gang activity, locating gangs, and focusing appropriate resources on them. The tool also describes how communities can follow proven anti-gang strategies and how to implement the model locally.
