South Carolina Mayors Set Goals for Expanded Afterschool Learning 

SC Afterschool SummitMore than 75 municipal and school district officials from cities and towns across South Carolina gathered in Charleston, S.C., on July 15 to participate in a statewide mayoral summit on afterschool and expanded learning. The event was sponsored by the South Carolina Afterschool Alliance (SCAA) in partnership with NLC, the Municipal Association of South Carolina (MASC), Colonial Life and Accident Insurance Company and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Cities of Service Leadership Grants Awarded to 10 Cities

New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Nashville, Tenn., Mayor Karl Dean announced the 10 winners of the second round of “Cities of Service” Leadership Grants at the National Conference on Volunteering and Service held recently in New York City.  The grants, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies, provide recipients with $200,000 over two years to hire a chief service officer tasked with developing a citywide service plan and promoting volunteerism. The winning cities are Atlanta; Austin, Texas; Baltimore; Baton Rouge, La.; Chula Vista, Calif.; Houston; Little Rock, Ark.; Orlando, Fla.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; and Richmond, Va.

New Report on Local Hiring Policies that Facilitate Reentry of People with Criminal Records

IYEF_NELP_Cities_Pave_the_WayThe National Employment Law Project (NELP) and the YEF Institute have published a new strategy guide entitled "Cities Pave the Way: Promising Reentry Policies that Promote Local Hiring of People with Criminal Records." The guide, made possible by support from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, highlights established, innovative local hiring policies that increase the chances that individuals with criminal records will find work, live within the law, and give back to their communities.

New Municipal Action Guide on Improving Family, Friend and Neighbor Care

IYEF_FFN_Care_MAG_6-10The YEF Institute has published a new Municipal Action Guide on "Promoting School Readiness by Improving Family, Friend and Neighbor Care," which highlights steps that city leaders can take to connect family, friend and neighbor (FFN)caregivers with the information, resources and support needed to promote early learning and healthy child development. These strategies were identified through a joint, two-year technical assistance initiative sponsored by the YEF Institute and United Way Worldwide with support from the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

Bank On Louisville Reflects Mayor's Focus on Outcomes for Children and Families

Abramson Bank On LouisvilleMayor Jerry E. Abramson is reaching out to Louisville’s 28,000 “unbanked” citizens with a new program called Bank On Louisville. The mayor’s goal is to have at least 1,200 individuals or families open new checking and savings accounts by the end of 2011. Launched on July 1, Bank On Louisville exemplifies Mayor Abramson’s results-focused leadership on behalf of young people and families in his city. As one of the founders of the Mayors’ Action Challenge for Children and Families, Abramson has shown how mayors can hold their cities accountable and respond to the needs of vulnerable residents by setting specific, measurable goals.

Council Focuses on Preserving Investments in Children, Youth and Families During Tough Budget Times

YEFCouncilStrategies for sustaining progress and preserving key investments for children, youth and families in the face of bleak fiscal conditions topped the agenda for the summer meeting of NLC’s Council on Youth, Education and Families (YEF Council), which was hosted and chaired by Saint Paul, Minn., Mayor Christopher Coleman on June 24-25. The meeting also featured in-depth discussions of future directions for NLC’s Institute for Youth, Education and Families and the likely impact of pending shifts in federal education policy on cities and towns.

Youth Today Broadens Focus to Highlight City-Sponsored Youth Initiatives

Youth Today’s new publisher, Sara Fritz, has announced that the respected newspaper and news website is planning to provide more coverage of city government-sponsored youth programs. Since it was founded in 1998, Youth Today has focused primarily on non-profit programs funded by foundations and the federal government. But Fritz, who succeeded founder Bill Treanor as the publisher, told the staff of the YEF Institute that she intends to broaden her news organization’s focus to showcase innovative programs and strategies developed by city governments. She invites NLC members and other YEF Institute registrants to send their announcements about local initiatives to improve outcomes for children and youth to Editor Patrick Boyle at pboyle@youthtoday.org. Council of States Governments Justice Center Launches Reentry Programs Database

The
Council of State Governments Justice Center recently launched an online Reentry Programs Database, developed with support from the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) and the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), U.S. Department of Justice. It is designed to catalogue adult and juvenile programs nationwide that work to make individuals' return to communities from prisons, jails, and juvenile corrections facilities safer and more successful. This resource includes city-led initiatives from New Haven, Conn., Wilmington, Del., and Louisville, Ky.
