Leadership Academy on Helping Families Achieve Financial Stability (March 17-18, 2008)

Local elected officials and senior municipal staff gathered in Washington, D.C. to participate in a two-day Leadership Academy on Helping Working Families Achieve Financial Stability.

Earned Income Tax Credits and Beyond Summit (2007)
In July 2007, the YEF Institute and United Way of America brought together more than 350 local United Way leaders and municipal officials in San Francisco to exchange ideas, share promising practices, and develop strong local and national partnerships in the area of financial stability.

These community leaders worked in teams to create action plans for improving the financial stability of the families they serve, with the Earned Income Tax Credit as the foundation. Sessions included:

  • Financial Stability: Making it Work, a thought leaders’ roundtable with United Way President and CEO Brian Gallagher; Jose Cisneros, Treasurer of the City and County of San Francisco; John Hoffmire from the Center on Business and Poverty, Annika Little from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation; John Maggs of the National Journal; Michelle Singletary of the Washington Post; and Ralph Smith, senior vice president of the Annie E. Casey Foundation.
  • A keynote address from Mayor Ron Dellums of the City of Oakland.
  • Investing in Communities for Impact, with a keynote address from Andrew Plepler, president of the Bank of America Charitable Foundation.
  • Public Policy Matters, a targeted plenary featuring Jonathan Mintz, commissioner of the Department of Consumer Affairs in New York City.
  • Keys to Building a Successful EITC Campaign, a targeted plenary featuring David Marzahl, executive director of the Center for Economic Progress.
  • Technology Matters: The Nets to Ladders Partnership, a targeted plenary with Marc Ferguson, president of Nets to Ladders.

Helping Working Families Leadership Academy (2004)
More than 40 city leaders gathered in Washington, D.C., in November 2004 to learn strategies for connecting families with the Earned Income Tax Credits, food stamps, home heating assistance, and children's health insurance.
