National City Afterschool Summit
Mayors and Councilmembers Invited to the Third Biennial National City Afterschool Summit
April 19-21, 2010
NLC extends a special invitation to mayors and councilmembers from across the nation to attend the third National City Afterschool Summit. The Summit will highlight and promote municipal leadership to create citywide systems of quality afterschool programs for children and youth. The Summit will take place on April 19-21, 2010, at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Washington, D.C. This year's theme will focus on using afterschool learning opportunities to strengthen your city's workforce.
The Summit will provide mayors and councilmembers with a venue to interact with other city leaders who share their passion for supporting quality afterschool initiatives in their communities. Despite significant budget challenges due to the current economic climate, municipal leaders in cities across the nation have voiced strong support for afterschool activities. To help bolster the partnerships that support afterschool, NLC encourage municipal leaders to attend the Summit with a leader from the business community who is either a supporter of afterschool or who you would like to engage in supporting your community’s afterschool agenda.
Held in partnership with the Afterschool Alliance, and supported by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the Summit will offer city officials and their business partners the opportunity to:
- Learn how to make the case for the importance of expanded learning opportunities in improving young people's workforce skills and contributing to economic development;
- Strengthen ties with business leaders to create a unified vision for afterschool;
- Network and learn from peers about city strategies for afterschool investment, financing and sustainability, and innovative partnerships;
- Hear from national experts about the future of federal and state support for afterschool;
- Celebrate the efforts of mayors, councilmembers, and business leaders who are champions for quality afterschool programs;
- Hear from Congressional leaders who are leaders in helping to make afterschool programs a national priority; and
- Recognize local officials nominated as state champions for afterschool with the "Breakfast of Champions" award presented by the Afterschool Alliance.
This year’s Summit will be held in conjunction with the Afterschool Alliance’s Afterschool for All Challenge and the National Afterschool Association (NAA)’s annual convention. Municipal leaders attending the Summit will have the opportunity to share ideas and strategies with more than 2,500 afterschool providers, advocates, and community leaders.
