New NLC Initiative to Help Cities Align Early Education and Public School Systems (2/01/10)
Municipal leaders and early childhood development experts gathered in Washington, D.C., last month for the launch of a new NLC initiative to help cities better align local early care and education programs with their public school systems. The goal of the new Educational Alignment for Young Children initiative, which is made possible by support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, is to increase the likelihood that children will be poised for educational success by the time they reach the third grade. Read more in Nation's Cities Weekly »
NLC and New Jersey League of Municipalities Help Seven Cities Launch Mayor’s Book Clubs (9/28/09)
Mayors from seven New Jersey cities gathered at the New Jersey State Library in Trenton last week to announce that they will launch Mayor’s Book Clubs as part of their efforts to develop community-wide early literacy agendas. The seven cities — Clifton, Hightstown, Hope Township, Jersey City, Mount Arlington, Neptune Township and Trenton — will receive technical assistance from NLC’s Institute for Youth, Education, and Families (YEF Institute) and the New Jersey State League of Municipalities (NJLM) in partnership with the National Center for Family Literacy, and with support from the New Jersey Verizon Foundation. NLC Project Helps Six Cities Promote School Readiness (2/23/09)
With support from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the Cities and United Ways Supporting School Readiness technical assistance initiative helped municipal and United Way leaders in Atlanta; Denver; Des Moines, Iowa; Nashville, Tenn.; Providence, R.I.; and San Antonio develop and implement school readiness action plans. The project provided these cities with access to national experts in school readiness, numerous opportunities for peer exchange and site visits to local programs.
