Technical Assistance Projects

Cities and United Ways Promoting School Readiness Project

The Cities and United Ways Promoting School Readiness initiative, with support from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, is helping the cities of Atlanta, Denver, Des Moines, Iowa, Nashville, Tenn., Providence, R.I., and San Antonio strengthen their efforts to promote school readiness among young children. The project will also focus on efforts to support children in family, friend and neighbor (FFN) care settings.

Cities Supporting Parents of Young Children Project (2005-07)

The Cities Supporting Parents of Young Children (CSP) initiative assisted municipal officials in six cities in creating systems of support for the parents of young children in their communities. By providing ideas and tools for action to the project cities, the YEF Institute helped them take concrete steps that enhanced at least two of the following four major strands of parent support:

  • Communications campaigns;
  • Initiatives to connect families with early childhood resources;
  • Programs to engage and empower parents; and
  • Efforts to establish or expand family-friendly workplace policies.

The YEF Institute selected six cities to participate in this technical assistance project: Bryan, Texas; Charleston, S.C.; Enfield, Conn.; Fort Worth, Texas; Lakewood, Ohio; and Longmont, Colo.  Each city made significant progress on their local early childhood plans.  Lessons from these cities initiatives are available in the YEF Institute's report, Supporting Parents: Promising City Efforts to Help Young Children Succeed.
