K-12 School Improvement
Mayors and city councilmembers are essential partners in improving public schools, and can play key roles during school improvement initiatives, even when they have no formal or direct authority over local school districts, including:
-
Focusing public attention on student achievement, teaching, and supports for learning;
-
Obtaining data that establishes benchmarks by which to measure future progress;
-
Convening disparate groups to discuss key priorities and mobilize the community to take action;
-
Promoting adequate school funding;
-
Removing obstacles to achievement;
-
Sharing information and resources between cities and school districts; and
-
Supporting learning outside of schools.
