Youth
Council Spotlight: Tampa, FL
Tampa, Fla. (Pop. 383,888) Mayor’s Youth Corps is comprised
of about 30-40 youth selected from all public and private city high schools.
Throughout the year, Youth Corps members are engaged in a variety of activities
ranging from participating in leadership sessions, meeting with the mayor, and
organizing community service projects. In 2004, the Youth Corps began a
partnership with the local television station to create “From the Corps”, a
monthly television show produced by a group of Youth Corps members. Eight to ten youth are selected annually to
work with a producer on creating nine shows throughout the year. Youth determine
the content of each show and are exposed to all elements of television
production from the technical aspects to being in front of the camera. They have also undertaken special projects,
including creating public service announcements on recycling and utilizing local
parks, and documenting the Youth Corps experience at the National League of
Cities’ Congressional Cities Conference in Washington, DC. “From the Corps” episodes have won several
awards from the Hometown Studio Festival and Florida Parks and Recreation Association.
