NLC Elects 2008 Officers at Congress of Cities
Madison, Al., Council Member Cynthia McCollum was elected the 2008 president of the National League of Cities, Northglenn, Co., Mayor Kathleen Novak was elected first vice president, and Riverside, Ca., Mayor Ronald O. Loveridge was elected second vice president.

NLC is governed by its Board, which includes the president, first and second vice presidents, all past presidents still in government service, and 40 local elected officials and state municipal league directors.

The Nominating Process for Officers and Board of Directors
All those wishing to be considered for NLC Officer and Board of Director positions should indicate plans to run for office by completing a Candidate Data Form, which is made available in September of each year. The form is used to ensure that the Nominating Committee has consistent background information on all candidates. All relevant details and dates will be provided on the form and on the website.
The Nominating Committee convenes for a public hearing each year during the Congress of Cities to receive nominations for NLC Officers and Board of Directors. All candidates for office will address the Nominations Committee to present their credentials.
Candidates for Officer positions have five minutes to address the Nominating Committee, and Board of Director candidates have three minutes. There will be no nominating and seconding speeches.
The Nominating Committee will then meet in closed session priro to the annual business meeting to develop its recommended slate. That slate will be presented to the voting delegates for action the following day at the Annual Business Meeting. The recommended slate will be distributed broadly during the conference shortly after the committee finishes its work that Friday afternoon.

Committee Chairs and Vice Chairs
Applications and biographical statements for committee chairs and vice chairs for all standing committees were due at the NLC headquarters by Friday, Sept. 14, 2007.
Leadership appointments are made by the NLC first vice president, prior to the Congress of Cities. Factors reviewed for leadership appointments are determined by the first vice president, but typically include commitment to NLC, knowledge of committee issues, and a willingness to give both the time and energy necessary to lead the standing groups.

Committee appointments will be announced in early January. All committees, councils and panels will meet for the first time at the Congressional City Conference, which will be held March 8-12, 2008 in Washington, DC.
