City of Portland Hosts Mobile Workshops

As host city for the NLC’s Green Cities Conference and Exposition, the City of Portland has embraced the opportunity to offer mobile workshops that highlight the city’s successful and replicable “green” practices.

"The mobile workshops are educational tours of some of the City of Portland's innovative and award-winning green projects. We are delighted to be able to share our experiences with city leaders from around the country," said Jill Kolek, Training, Education and Outreach Manager for the City of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability.

The tours will take place on Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19th. Those already registered can add mobile workshops to their existing registration. See instructions at the bottom of the page. Watch coming issues of Nation’s Cities Weekly for profiles of the mobile workshop tours.

NEW: Streetcars as the Catalyst for Sustainable Development
Tour the Portland Streetcar project and the Pearl District, South Waterfront and Downtown  redevelopment it has engendered, with the former City Commissioner who led the project.

Sunday, April 19, 2009 -  12:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. (Pacific Time)

Columbia Boulevard Wastewater Treatment Plant Biogas (Digester Gas) Combined Heat and Power Facility (CHP).

The City Portland Bureau of Environmental Services Wastewater Group owns and operates a 1.7  megawatt CHP facility with twin 850 kilowatt digester gas fired internal combustion engines  that utilize methane gas derived from anaerobically digested sewage sludge's. These generators create heat and electrical power that lowers the facilities electrical energy  needs by 1/2 saving nearing $500,000 annually. The tour will include a complete description of CHP and gas treatment facilities.

FILLED/Portland Farmers Market Tour

Portland Farmers Market (PFM) supports the region's farms by connecting consumers directly to local food producers, strengthening urban-rural community bonds, and educating the general public on the benefits of eating locally produced food.  Founded in 1992 with thirteen vendors, PFM has undergone impressive growth.  Today, they operate four well-established greenmarkets in the urban core and welcome more than 535,000 shoppers per season, generating $5.5 million in direct sales to local farmers and food artisans. In addition to a guided walk-around tour of the market, a presentation and a question and answer period with the market's executive director will help you understand the critical role that shopping at the farmer's market plays in keeping our local family farmers farming, strengthening the local economy, and adding to the health and vibrancy of our community.

Ride the Portland Streetcar from downtown Portland through the South Waterfront District to a "behind the scenes" tour of the Portland Aerial Tram.  Return by Streetcar to downtown.  Possible extension to the Pearl District.

FILLED/Green Urban Development: South Waterfront

Join members of Portland's Bureau of Planning and Sustainability on a tour of the South Waterfront district, Portland's newest district developed on former shipyard brownfields.  The district includes a highly acclaimed LEED Platinum health care facility owned by the Oregon Health Sciences University and LEED Gold and Platinum residential towers.  South Waterfront has also incorporated innovative stormwater treatments, earning it the coveted "Salmon Safe" designation.

Sunderland Recycling Facility

The City of Portland Sunderland Recycling Facility composts leaves from street trees, crushes concrete and asphalt from street maintenance operations, and cleans street sanding material for reuse.  In the 2006-08 fiscal year, 57,880 cubic yards of street leaves, concrete and asphalt were recycled.  In addition to keeping that volume of material out of a landfill, the City benefited by saving over $3.5 million.  A tour of the Sunderland Recycling Facility includes a walk-through of all recycling operations, a discussion of the equipment used, and an introduction to stormwater treatment systems.  Other sustainability topics covered in the tour include the landscaping of native plants and the 10-kilowatt wind turbine, which provides power to the office building.

Special Needs:  Tour will require walking around the 12+ acre facility.  The ground is level, however, due to the nature of the operation the group will walk near or through trip hazards and wet or muddy services. Participants should wear closed toed and water resistant shoes.

FILLED/Sustainable Stormwater - Green Streets Tour

Visit the state-of-the-art Green Streets facilities in Portland.  Green Streets transform impervious street surfaces into landscaped green spaces that capture stormwater runoff and let water soak into the ground as plants and soil filter pollutants.  Green Streets convert stormwater from a waste directed into a pipe, to a resource that replenishes groundwater supplies.  They also create attractive streetscapes and urban green spaces, provide natural habitat and help connect neighborhoods, schools, parks and business districts.

Join the City of Portland's Green Building staff on a walking tour showcasing Portland's renowned green building projects and sustainable planning efforts.  You'll learn about several LEED Gold and Platinum building, view stormwater management facilities that capture and treat rainwater, experience innovative urban development practices and enjoy several well-loved parks. Special Needs - this tour will require a moderate amount of walking

Ecosystem RestorationTour of Stephens Creek

Subwatershed enhancement projects (confluence restoration, sewer realignment with integrated habitat enhancements and headwaters acquisition). This is an enhancement project that improved neighborhood livability, protects stream headwaters as well as the two aforementioned investments in infrastructure and habitat restoration. Special Needs - one of the sites requires walking on an uneven path for 5-10 minutes.  Bring rain gear dependent on forecast.

FILLED/Alternative Transportation Modes: Tour of Portland Bike Facilities

Hop on a bike with us and see for yourself how Portland has become the best city for bicycling in the United States.  The 9 mile tour will visit a variety of historic neighborhoods, greenways and innovative transportation projects that offer a unique perspective on Portland.  Bicycles will be provided. Special Needs:  Participants must be able to ride a bicycle for 9 miles.
