Green Cities Conference & Expo Leadership Training Institute Seminars
As part of pre-conference activities at the National League of Cities' Green Cities Conference & Expo, the Leadership Training Institute will offer a full-day seminar on Saturday, April 18 and a morning seminar on Sunday, April 19. The topics will target leadership and strategic planning professional development ideas towards supporting the "green" initiatives of local municipalities.
Registration for the LTI Seminars is available at the online Green Cities Registration site. To register for an LTI Seminar, you must also be registered for the conference. LTI Seminar Descriptions and Cost
L01: The Green Cities Balancing Act: A Strategic Plan to Manage Current Needs without Compromising the City’s Future 9:00 am – 5:00 pm – Saturday, April 18, 2009 Registration Fee: $145 Competency: Competent Practitioner / Catalyst (4 credits) The challenge is upon us to design and build emission-free communities and carbon-neutral cities! The need for action comes at a time when growing demands in all areas of local government are challenging cities beyond their existing resources. Examine what successful cities are doing to manage current needs without compromising the city and the environment’s future. Learn and examine best practices in green partnerships and sustainability from premiere ‘Green Cities’ around the world. Success depends upon progress and progress begins with a plan. While many local government leaders can point with pride to environment-friendly efforts, one of the biggest challenges continues to be the design of effective sustainability metrics and incorporating them into the strategic plan. Establishing baselines, progress measures and meaningful data has long been a road block to successful implementation of even the best strategic plans. Discover how to move beyond old strategic planning and create a new process with sustainability metrics to move your city ahead! Leave with a process for taking your city to the next level.
Trainer: Caryn Tilton is President and CEO of My Place to Learn, Inc. and Caryn Tilton Consulting, LLC CTC, which focuses on organizational development and management for both public and private sector entities. Working with local government leaders, Tilton developed System Integration, a unique approach to combining board level policy development, leadership-level strategic planning and enterprise performance management. Tilton has also taught courses at various universities in Oregon and written numerous publications and manuals for both local government and the private sector.
L02: Leading Innovation and Change: The Imperative for Sustainable Cities 9:00 am – 12:30 pm – Sunday, April 19, 2009 Registration Fee: $95 Competency: Competent Practitioner / Catalyst (2 credits) Explore how and why cities are able to bring successful change or why they find outright resistance to change. Examine case studies for innovation in numerous cities across the United States; learn from both successful and ineffective models of leading innovation and change. Consider several key developments that are driving the push for urban sustainability; examine enablers and barriers to innovation. Discover the strategy for ‘learning cities’ and how it can accelerate the creation and adoption of innovation. Examine the concept of triple bottom line decision making (social, economic and environmental) as you learn the process of TBL/3BL and look at a case study of triple bottom line decision making utilized in innovative cities.
Trainer: George Beard is founder of GovernmentWise Inc., a consultancy on public sector innovation, performance improvement, and development of next-generation leaders. Beard is also a Senior Instructor & Consulting Principal for The Executive Leadership Institute, Mark O. Hatfield School of Government at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon.
