Overview
Increased civic energy aimed at greening cities around the world inspired the National League of Cities to sanction its first Green Cities Conference and Expo, which was held April 18-21, 2009 in Portland, Oregon. More than 750 participants and 235 cities were represented at the conference.
In cities around the world, environmental issues aren’t trendy; they are fundamental realities that alter the health, economic viability and growth of communities. Local government officials and staff strive to implement green initiatives and innovations that bolster the economic and physical health of cities.
While green conferences are springing up all over for both consumers and business to business, the 2009 Green Cities Conference and Expo focused on the unique knowledge and resources needed by city governments.

Programming
It takes a team to green a village (city or town), and programming at the 2009 Green Cities conference was designed to help city green teams update or develop comprehensive sustainability plans.
Support networks are critical to the development and implementation of such a comprehensive initiative. At the 2009 Green Cities Conference and Expo attendees found:
- An exposition of vendors with environmentally friendly products and services
- Networking and action planning sessions
- Leadership Training Institute Seminars
- Opportunities to update or develop comprehensive sustainability plans
- General sessions, workshops about programs that work
- Pre-conference mobile workshops that show why Portland, Oregon is consistently ranked as one of America’s greenest cities
