Saturday Morning General Session Speaker: Ed Begley, Jr. Author, actor and environmental activist
Ed Begley, Jr., actor, author, long-time environmental activist and host of “Living with Ed” on HGTV, will address attendees of the 2009 Congress of Cities and Exposition on sustainability during the Saturday, November 14, morning general session.
For more than 37 years, Begley has practiced living the green life and speaks eloquently of its benefits to individuals and communities.
Explains Begley on a video from the website http://livingwithed.net, even those skeptical of the role of human activity in climate change will find benefits from green action. At a minimum, people will see the benefits of cleaning up the air in heavily populated cities, putting money in their own pocket thanks to the long-term financial benefits of green actions and lessening dependence on foreign oil.
If people’s actions can impact the environment to the negative, they can also impact to the positive, says Begley.
Turning up at Hollywood events on his bicycle, Ed has been considered an environmental leader in the Hollywood community for many years. He has served as chairman of the Environmental Media Association, and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. He still serves on those boards, as well as the Thoreau Institute, the Earth Communications Office, Tree People and Friends of the Earth, among many others.
His work in the environmental community has earned him a number of awards from some of the most prestigious environmental groups in the nation, including the California League of Conservation Voters, the Natural Resources Defense Council, The Coalition for Clean Air, Heal the Bay and the Santa Monica Baykeeper.
He currently lives near Los Angeles in a self-sufficient home powered by solar energy. His experience living the green life has been translated into a book, Living Like Ed: A Guide to the Eco-Friendly Life and a reality television series for HGTV entitled “Living With Ed,” now in its second season.
Saturday Delegate Luncheon Speaker: Doris Kearns Goodwin Pulitzer Prize Winning Author and Historian
Influential political author and historian, Doris Kearns Goodwin, will address 2009 Congress of Cities attendees on the subject of leadership in times of crisis during the closing general session on November 14. Goodwin’s books provide insight and historical perspective on politicians past that are being studied by today’s political leaders. Her most recent work, a monumental history of Abraham Lincoln entitled Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, published in October 2005, joined the best-seller lists on its first week in publication, and soon reached #1 on the New York Times Best-Seller List. Team of Rivals won the 2006 Lincoln Prize for an outstanding work about the president and/or the Civil War, the inaugural New York Historical Society Book Prize, the Richard Nelson Current award and the New York State Archives History Makers Award. Steven Spielberg is developing a feature film about the book, set to star Liam Neeson as Lincoln and Sally Field as Mary. Goodwin has authored books on political leaders for more than 40 years. In 1976, she authored Lyndon Johnson & The American Dream, which became a New York Times best-seller. Goodwin has served as an assistant to Lyndon Johnson during his last year in the White House and later assisted him in writing his memoirs. She followed up in 1987 with the political biography, The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys, which stayed on the New York Times Best-Seller List for five months. In 1990, it was made into a six-hour ABC miniseries. Her next book, No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The American Home Front During World War II, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in April 1995. Goodwin appears regularly on network television programs and was an on-air consultant for PBS documentaries on Lyndon B. Johnson, the Kennedy Family, and Franklin Roosevelt.
