Leadership Training Council Announces Michael H.T. Lynch Scholarship

by Sara Weiser

NLC members may apply for the Michael H.T. Lynch Scholarship, which provides $2,500 toward the expenses of attending the annual Leadership Summit.

The NLC Board of Directors, along with the Leadership Training Council, adopted a resolution in March, that created a scholarship in memory of Michael H.T. Lynch, councilmember from Kirkwood, Mo. Councilmember Lynch was an active member of the Leadership Training Council for several years. He served on the council’s subcommittee for scholarships, where he reached out to several of his fellow elected officials and encouraged them to participate in the education and training opportunities offered by NLC.

After his untimely death in February, when he was killed at a Kirkwood city council meeting, along with Councilmember Connie Karr and three other city officials, the Leadership Training Council wanted to carry on Councilmember Lynch’s role as an advocate for education.

“Mike was a good friend and led the effort to enroll Kirkwood as a member of the Inclusive Communities Partnership,” noted James Hunt, councilmember, Clarksburg, W.Va., and NLC’s immediate past president. “I spent quite a bit of time with Mike and came to appreciate his dedication and love for his city.”

The scholarship is intended to provide a training opportunity, along with the resources, for a local official who exemplifies the same commitment to community and love for ongoing learning for which Lynch himself is remembered.

“Michael was a true citizen leader,” remarked Doug Echols, mayor, Rock Hill, S.C., and former Leadership Training Council chair. “He was always interested in how, as elected officials, we could become better informed in order to provide greater service to our citizens and communities.”

Applications for the Michael H.T. Lynch Scholarship are available from the NLC Leadership Training Institute. The deadline for applications is July 15. More information can be found on NLC’s website at www.nlc.org or by contacting the Leadership Training Institute at (202) 626-3170 or lti@nlc.org.

NLC’s annual Leadership Summit is a retreat-style training program focused on personal leadership development for local officials, providing new leadership skills and abilities that participants can put into practice in their home communities.

The 2008 Leadership Summit, “Exploring the Frontiers of Leadership in Local Government,” will be held September 11-13 at the Resort at the Mountain in Welches, Ore.
